How do I tell if my dogs are play-fighting or if one of them genuinely doesn't enjoy the presence of the other?
Shiro frequently chases Bambi around the house, and though I know Bambi definitely enjoys it (he wags his tail and constantly runs past Shiro to tease him), I cannot tell if Shiro does. During the process, he never wags his tail but pants -or 'smiles'- sometimes. He always growls and bites, but there have been no casualties so far. It, honestly, all looks like play to me. Shiro could definitely hurt this little chihuahua if he truly wanted to.
THE THING IS: On regular occasion, Shiro will growl and move away when Bambi goes near, so I know he doesn't like this new pup. Why would he play with a puppy he doesn't like? This has had me confused for a while and I'm crossing my fingers that I'm not wrong on the play-fighting thing.
Our 6 month old puppy, Belle, somehow contrived to get gum stuck in the fur between her paw pads and the fur of her chest. If worst comes to worst I can cut it out of the hair on her chest, but not the fur between her paw pads, and she's been licking at her paws and trying to chew it out, so I want to do something about it before she chews or licks her paws raw.
My friend has something called Goo-gone that she said I could use if I use it and then give her a bath, which I certainly can do, but I was wondering if there was anything better for getting the gum out from between her toes.
Thanks in advance!

These three lovely dogs were stolen from our local no-kill shelter run by Stand Up for Animals over the holiday weekend. They were found missing the day after Christmas with no sign of who took them. There is a reward if anyone has information. Please help these dogs avoid becoming bait dogs somewhere. Call 305-743-3779 or 305-393-0294 if you see them.
This is Shyla - she is a senior boxer girl and is deaf.
This is Kaiser - he is an adult with a scarred nose.
This is Elmo - he is very playful and has buggy eyes.

yes, he dug that hole

i posted a couple months ago with an update that cocoa has lyme disease. she's been fine since then. BUT last night we were sleeping in my bed and she woke me up by, like... running out of my bed. she jumped down and walked into my tv stand, then smacked her head into my door. she wobbled and freaked out while she walked down the hallway. she jumped on the couch, then jumped down and did a tuck and roll kind of thing. By this time i had a panic attack. but my parents say she flopped out the door, and by the time she peed, she walked back up the stairs and was fine. She just woke up and shes acting very normal.
Could something have fallen asleep? Like her back legs? She was walking like she was shit faced drunk. She did this one other time like 2 years ago but it only lasted a min. This was like 5 min. help please :(
Nothing cynical today, just something I HAD to share with others that would appreciate the humor. The census was very low this week, so in efforts to try and stay awake Thursday night I read all the progress notes in every chart. It was a darned good idea too, since the explosive laughter, snorting and chortling kept me alert and perky for quite some time...
The doc that wrote this is a very stodgy and grumpy fellow. I wish I could have seen the look on his face as he wrote these words:
"He chewed through his pleurevac tube (I never wrote these words before)"
HOHOHO!
May 2010 bring more great

Just had to call in a rather complicated verbal order (U/S guided thoracentesis, in the AM to be sent for... a list as long as my arm.)
And then I looked at the clock. 6:50. Shift change is 7 PM.
THIS is why I can't wait for computer order entry.
Hello, dog lovers! I come with a Christmas surprise. His name is Cornelius.
Cornelius was found yesterday evening, Christmas Eve, in fact. He was loose in the middle of a busy road and covered in gasoline and demodex mange. Naturally, we pulled over and picked him up. He is now clean and comfortable in my utility room.
Unfortunately for Cornelius, we are renters and our landlord does not allow pit bulls. This pretty much means that if we do not find a rescue for him to go to before our landlord finds out, we will be forced to take him to animal control. We don't really want to do this. Can you help? Do you know of anyone who can?
Cornelius is located in Orlando, Florida, but we are willing to travel pretty far to make sure he's safe, even set up an out of state transport. He's a very friendly, enthusiastic boy. He doesn't appear to be terribly reactive towards dogs and cats, but he has only seen them while out on walks. All he wants to do is snuggle and play with squeaky toys. He looks to be about 8 months old and is unaltered.
Here are some pictures. Be warned, the demodex covers his entire body. He seems in good spirits in spite of how itchy and uncomfortable he is!( look under here for an itchy dog )
this will be cross posted, so sorry if you see it more than once. Feel free to post his story wherever you please
Merry Christmas from Charlie and his Santa hat. :)
So ive only posted here once, and you may not remember me and my toy poodle Mim... but ill post anyway!
Mim's had a double whammy this week, it was her 1st birthday on Monday, and then her first Christmas!
Here are some pictures of her first Christmas! I am just so glad to have her, she is seriously the best thing that has happened to me :) Although in some of the pictures she looks a bit poopy because this morning, she ran out the front door and nearly got ran over :/ and I got scared, and growled at her.
( under here :) )
And also, new friends are always welcome!

I have a pet peeve with people that refuse to control or watch their kids during parties. My sister had a christmas party. I took my dog with me because I would have had no way home to let her out. (no car. Plus was there for eight hours). It was a family and friends gathering/christmas/birthday party. For the most part everything was going ok. later in the night one of the two year old kids there started to maul on my dog. She was sitting with me, and the little girl came over and started petting her. Which is ok. Then she got up in her face, and wrapped her arms around her. When I tried to stop her, and told her no, my dog took off running through the dining room to get away from her. The kid chased after her. My sister and her friends were standing in the dining room too busy talking and playing with their nintendo ds's to pay attention to what was going on with their kids. mother of said kid was standing right next to her. When I asked them to grab the kid so she wasn't getting bit, my sister bitched me out in front of everyone and told me I needed to control my dog so she wasn't biting anyone. that i needed to get up off my ass and take care of it myself since it was my dog. Needless to say we had words, and she was told there was no reason to treat me like crap in front of everyone just because I asked her to intervene. After all, she was standing right there. her response was, well, she's only two years old, and likes dogs. Kids mom never said a word during the whole thing. In fact her dad, ended up watching her the rest of the night. He was much nicer about it when I asked him to watch her around the dog. She's a cute little kid and was well behaved most of the night. I just wish her parents were watching her better. Because I didn't want to see her get hurt. In case anyone was wondering, I made sure the dog was with me most of the night, and she was under control.
And just so this is not too OT, here is a picture I took of sadie some time ago. Plus a couple of doggy portraits I have recently finished through ebay.

Also, she doesn't seem to like her crate lately. She has plenty of blankets to lay on. Yet every morning I come in there, and the thing is trashed, food and water bowles are knocked over, blankets kicked to one one corner, etc. This morning she managed to escape after I had though I had locked it good. She has to be crated at night because she has had accidents in the house before. Anyone else have dogs that have suddenly decided they no longer like their crates? She's only in there for a few hours at night. can't give her a dog bed in there. She destroys them.
